Could.Not.Agree.More.

Nearly spat out my tea when she exclaimed ‘Was Big a mistake?’

Get to fuck the lot of ya...

Back in the day, when making a show for women and gay men was a revolutionary act, everything about it was notable, especially Samantha. ( Should a grown adult woman, enjoying sex and talking about it, be a cultural shift? Discuss) Like so much before it, it disappeared up its own arse, sucking it's branded pencil cases and cheap perfume with it. Let's just assume that killing off the best character because of an argument about money, was a handy cut off point.

I'm not counting the movies because they were fucking clown shoes.

This is one long feverdream 🤣

We could pretend that at the end of the SATC series, Carrie ate some dodgy prawns and everything that we've seen and heard since is only in her (literally) fevered imagination. That's about AS credible as this TRAVESTY. x

I think they are possibly building her up to look like a big old romantic fool. A bit of placating and then ultimately dashing the dreams of the justice-for-Aidan set...but I am possibly holding on to a gossamer thin strand of hope here.

I couldn't go back to watching AJLT after Season 1, and reading this, I'm so, so glad I didn't. I'm just going to continue to pretend the show ended with the last episode of Sex and the City and leave it there.

That last episode of SATC was perfect— they’ve stripped all dignity from the characters with everything since

I just wrote this exact thing in another essay. PERFECT. Only was down (and down and down)

This is EVERYTHING. Could never understand anyone who was a fan of Aidan and now AJLT are in on it too. Cackled out loud at the list and in particular, this bit 'though, to be fair, if a man said, “hey pop-tart, where you been and what you been doing” every time I walked in the door, I might wear his skin as a coat)'.

I'm so glad I didn't start watching this, between no Samantha (Go Kim Catrell!!) and Big's death i don't care about any of these people.

ALSO TO ADD, SHE ABSOLUTELY REFUSED TO GIVE UP BIG TO THE UNHINGED LEVEL SHE LET HIM COME TO AIDAN’S CABIN. She would have rather sacrifice Aidan for Big, even when she was engaged to Aidan and knowing Aidan despised Big!!!

Loved your perspective here, hilarious and just absolutely bang on.

Loved this - could not watch the original show because it was so full of itself it turned me off. But this is fantastic Terri. Hilarious write-up. And while I haven't seen it I know of your past rants about the show from Pilot and loved those so had to read this. Sounds like a complete shit show - literally.

Amazing writing and analysis. That "Was Big a mistake" moment felt surreal and you've articulated it perfectly. New Miranda just letting that question hang in the air, too! This show is driving me crazy but I can't stop watching, either.

"I don't know what to say". SOMEONE ACTUALLY WROTE THAT AS DIALOGUE. Miranda always had sommeat to say, even when she was being a judgemental nightmare! X

Love that you brought all the receipts for this, Terri. Totally with your analysis. Could they really not have stumped up the cash to bring Samantha back? And if not, why not give Seema some really good and comparable plotlines? Plus Miranda? Does giving up alcohol make you stupid, somehow? She used to be so smart and tough

Brilliant! You captured everything that's wrong with AJLT. She and Big were the thread that ran through SATC. For her to suggest that Big was a mistake was simply unforgivable to the audience. We know better.

Agree with every wonderful word. Brilliant brilliant critique and I haven’t even watched JLT because I found it grating and a disservice to the snappy, quirky smart joy of SATC. It was like SATC but without the humour. It became worthy and dull. Which sums up Aiden. I always remember feeling slightly nauseous when Aiden kissed Carrie - LIKE HE WAS EATING HER - so the thought that she would ever choose him (or that he would be that pathetic to go back to her again) is at odds with her character. Agree that this will be the nail in the show’s coffin (as wooden as Aiden’s acting).

Oh my! Just exactly.

Gave up on this mid way series 1 of ‘And Just Like That’.

It just went way too stupid.

Such a shame. Loved that show.

I loved reading every single word. It is all so true. Really well done.

What you forgot to mention though, were the real reasons why this was Bigs fate- the allegations made against him in real life. And because we all knew about them, any attempt to redirect the plot was just too obvious. And Stan dying 😔.

And please write about the first episode of season three where they have the most pathetic phone sex I’ve ever seen.
